Latest polling and Insights - The Today Podcasts

Professor Jane Green took part in the first episodes as the new Today podcast was launched, each coinciding with the leader speeches from the Conservative and then Labour conferences.

First joining the team to discuss the latest polling following Rishi Sunak’s conference speech, Professor Green warned of the need to look at polling numbers in terms of trends and averages, and cautioned that the concentration of voters is important and key to understanding if – and how – the Conservatives could still win.

Citing the economy as the number one concern for voters and explaining the very real issue of TRUST among the general public in the current Government’s ability to manage the economy. Prof Green concluded, ‘Voters judge political parties and leaders on who is trusted to deliver, there is currently a big “trust gap”.’

Then in the second episode, following Sir Keir Starmer’s conference speech, Prof Green discussed the implications of some recent research from the Nuffield Politics Research Centre relating to how concerns for younger relatives bridge generational divides.

Explaining the findings of the research Prof Green commented on the concerns of younger and older voters regarding housing and the impact of the financial situation of younger family members, concluding both Labour and (to only a slightly lesser extent) Conservative voters are in support of building more affordable and local housing.
